Visit the cheese town of Alkmaar or other historic cities from the Dutch Golden Age that are definitely worthwhile, including Hoorn, Edam and De Rijp. Other interesting attractions include the Zuiderzeemuseum (South Sea Museum) and the Zaanse Schans, and then there are the fishing villages of Marken and Volendam. Amsterdam is only 40 minutes away.
